"no politician’s words alone are going to protect LGBT Americans from discrimination in the workplace"

And neither will ENDA. What it will do is to make employers even more wary of hiring anything remotely trans looking.

There are always ways to make someones work life so miserable they will quit, and they don't even have to be obvious. The onus of proof will still be on the employee to prove discrimination. Not an easy thing to do when youre unemployed and out of the loop.

More things change the more they remain the same.

As you know, I'm no fan of incrementalism either, but I'm also not a fan of actively shooting ourselves in the foot just to make a point. The cost vs. value just doesn't balance out here.

The goal here is get an inclusive ENDA passed into law, not to get the President to say nice things about us in public. Yes, it's nice to hear, but no politician's words alone are going to protect LGBT Americans from discrimination in the workplace. I really don't have a problem with Obama avoiding speaking about transfolks directly in this speech as long as ENDA remains inclusive. The moment that changes I'll be out there complaining as loudly as anyone.

In the end, it's all about the rights. It has to be. Too many people have waited far too long for it to be about anything else.

Hey, don't be so quick to throw us B's in the same boat as the HRC crowd.

For a lot of these gay and lesbian orgs, I think a lot of our "support" from is just resignation in disguise. They know we're going to get 90% of the benefits of their work no matter how much they hate us. It's pretty hard to fight for same-sex unions and families without benefiting bisexuals in the bargain. I believe that if HRC could legally protect gays without protecting us, they'd do it in a second.
