Best Places to Work For Transfolks 2010

On October 7, 2009, in Goals, Ideals, Politics, by Dyssonance

It’s time, once again, for me to note the Best places for Transfolks to work, based on the HRV’s Corporate Equality Index and their “Best Places to work” list.

Yes, we know that the HRC has done a great many things to dramatically improve the way transfolk are dealt with in the CEI. Yes, we are aware these changes will take time to implement. No, we don’t particularly want to wait.

At 70 companies offering surgical coverage, and 46 of them showing up on the best places to work list, I thought I’d go ahead and put out my own version of the best places to work list, this time for transfolks.

There are a lot of law firms and tech service jobs there. I find it remarkably worth noting that retail is completely absent, although they make up a large portion of the cisGLB list. Many Retail companies also offer everything *but* surgery.

Moral of the story: if you want to get your surgery covered, go to college.

We’ll leave the aspect of that aside for now and maybe come back to the whole have/have not issue later…

Note, as well, that I’m using the reported “surgical procedures covered” point as my shift measure, since I know full well that:

  • Short term leave after medical procedures is short term disability coverage.
  • Mental health counseling is usually through an EAP with limited coverage and little experience.
  • Hormone therapy and Medical visits are usually covered anyway
  • And no one knows what “other” means, although we sorta hope it deals in BA/FFS stuff.

So while not perfect by any means, it does provide what I think is a more realistic look at who is actually putting their own policies to work among the HRC Best Companies.

But wait, there’s more!

And now for the 70 companies that provide Trans surgical benefits. Not all of them will do so pleasantly, mind you, and at least one is somewhat hostile to GLB issues.

All I’m gonna say is that I should never have gotten out of hardware break/fix, lol, and found a way to keep my certs up.

Well not to worry .. Perhaps old walt has an opening for a snow queen at the magic castle :)

I doubt it. He’s dead, for one, and I’m not California bound. Generally prefer places where the likelihood of earthquakes is significantly lower.

Nice place to visit, but I’ll not live there.

There’s always Florida, of course, but, well, it has hurricanes, lol.

Besides, I’d never use apples. You know that.

(nor would I ever give the task of killing two small children to a woodsman, but that’s a whole different story)
